“I can’t just leave you alone, sister.”
Ning Xuan shook her head firmly, her eyes locked onto Ning Yu’s.
“You don’t need to worry about my safety. Just treat me as expendable.”
Hearing these familiar words, Ning Yu felt a pang of emotion, but she remained resolute in her refusal.
“Let me put it this way—I’ll fight more effectively without you here.”
The words were harsh, but Ning Yu had to say them. She didn’t want Ning Xuan to risk her life unnecessarily.
Since she wasn’t being pursued, she could head to a safe place and wait for Ning Yu to resolve everything.
Ning Xuan, however, stubbornly pressed her lips together, refusing to give in.
Seeing her sister’s stubbornness, Ning Yu felt helpless. After a moment of thought, she spoke again, her tone firmer.
“You have to leave, or I’ll never see you again. I won’t hug you, and I won’t call you my sister anymore.”
For someone as stubborn as Ning Xuan, she had no choice but to resort to such drastic measures.
At these words, Ning Xuan’s eyes widened, and her lips trembled.
She knew Ning Yu wasn’t rejecting her—she was only trying to protect her. But she also knew Ning Yu was someone who kept her promises, and the thought of such a consequence was unbearable.
“I... I...”
She stammered, torn between not wanting to leave her sister to fight alone and being unable to bear the outcome.
Ning Yu walked over and gently patted her head.
“Be good and wait for me to handle this, okay?”
After a long hesitation, Ning Xuan reluctantly nodded, though her eyes were still filled with reluctance.
Ning Yu had already recovered from her earlier dizziness and was ready to move.
Behind her, countless waves of zombies were undoubtedly heading her way. There was no time to waste.
She summoned the Blood Kite from her system space and leaped to the top of the ruins, her silver hair fluttering in the wind.
Her amber eyes scanned the horizon, but for now, there were no mutated zombies in sight—only a few ordinary ones wandering the streets, likely locals.
Ning Xuan stood below, her gaze fixed on her sister’s back, lost in thought.
“I’m leaving. Find a safe place to stay,” Ning Yu called from above, turning back to give Ning Xuan a reassuring gesture.
Ning Xuan wanted to say more, but the words that came out were:
“Take care, sister.”
“Mm.”
“Come back alive.”
“Mm.”
“Promise to call me your sister again.”
“I promise.”
Without waiting for Ning Xuan’s next words, Ning Yu leaped from the ruins and disappeared from view.
Ning Xuan stared at the spot where her sister had vanished, feeling lost and unsure of where to go.
After adjusting her combat suit and taking a moment to recover, she too left the ruins.
......
Walking through the nearby alleys, Ning Yu casually dispatched the ordinary zombies, earning some points in the process.
She analyzed the terrain, sometimes climbing to high points, other times hiding in corners.
She had to make the most of her surroundings to take on this one-woman battle against thousands.
Logically, this wasn’t something an assassin should be doing. She should be targeting Chen Xing, the arrogant figure controlling the zombies from her throne.
But Chen Xing was too mysterious, and Ning Yu didn’t want to risk her life testing her abilities.
Her high-level [Scout] skill, which couldn’t be upgraded further, provided no additional information or revealed any weaknesses.
So, instead of taking such a gamble, eliminating all of Chen Xing’s underlings seemed like a better option.
With her nearly invincible [Mist Walk], she theoretically had nothing to fear from Chen Xing’s attacks—as long as she was alone.
Using her grappling hook to move between buildings, Ning Yu familiarized herself with the area before climbing to the top of a high-rise and pulling out a high-powered military telescope from her system space.
In the distance, the zombie horde was beginning to emerge. It wouldn’t be long before they reached her location.
She opened the system shop, browsing for weapons and equipment suitable for dealing with them.
Aside from considering large-scale destructive power, she also had to think about cost-effectiveness since her points weren’t infinite.
The RPG paired with thermobaric bombs, like she’d used in the food street before, was perfect for handling large groups of ordinary zombies. If used correctly, she could even earn more points than she spent.
But Ning Yu felt there might be something even more cost-effective. After all, she didn’t have Shen Yiyue’s [Future Reading], which guaranteed a hit with firearms.
She couldn’t adjust to the one future possibility that would cause the most damage.
For a moment, Ning Yu thought that if Shen Yiyue were here, things might be easier. But the thought passed quickly.
Even if Shen Yiyue could help, Ning Yu would rather she stayed safe.
So, she had to solve the problem herself.
“Hmm... the flamethrower looks good...”
“Incendiary grenades are also worth considering...”
The system was currently stocked with single-person combat weapons. From a cost-effectiveness perspective, the best approach was to cause widespread fire.
While this wouldn’t pose much of a threat to mutated zombies, as long as she could ignite the ordinary ones, the flames would spread through the horde, turning them all into points for her.
Wasn’t that better than burning them individually?
If Ning Yu were the one controlling the zombies, she wouldn’t have driven the ordinary ones to form a horde.
While it created a moving blockade on land, it didn’t restrict Ning Yu—it only gave her more room to maneuver.
She would have used only the more agile mutated zombies.
But no one besides Ning Yu knew that she could earn points from killing zombies.
So, this was just Ning Yu playing a mental game with herself.
After finishing her shopping, Ning Yu glanced at her inventory, now filled with weapons and equipment, and winced at the cost.
She’d have to earn it all back!
She began moving through the city again, setting up devices, planting grenades, and laying bombs in key locations.
In the desolate City A, a dark, swarming tide of zombies swept through like locusts, leaving destruction in their wake.
Occasionally, unlucky survivors were caught by the scent of the ordinary or mutated zombies, who broke in and killed them on the spot.
Ning Yu, now fully prepared, put down her telescope. The horde was close enough.
The Blood Kite fluttered around her, growing excited. This time, it would feast to its heart’s content.
