After Officer Leon let out a frantic scream, it seemed as though he had exhausted all his strength in his agitation. He collapsed to the ground, unconscious.
Luo Wei watched the scene in shock. What could have possibly happened to terrify this young officer so much?
He quickly turned his gaze to Chief Raymond, whose condition wasn’t much better. His face was utterly exhausted, devoid of any color, and his police uniform shirt was almost completely soaked in blood. After lying on the ground for just a short while, the blood pooling beneath him had formed a small puddle.
“Chief, what happened? Why did he say we need to leave Saint Callen?” Luo Wei asked urgently while checking his injuries.
There were numerous wounds on his body. When Luo Wei tore open the clothing around the wounds, he discovered that they appeared to be claw marks, likely caused by some kind of beast. The wounds weren’t large, but they were deep enough to expose bone.
Seeing the blood gushing from their injuries, Luo Wei couldn’t imagine how the two of them had managed to hold on until now.
Evelyn’s figure swiftly disappeared and reappeared, holding a medical kit in her hand.
“It’s shock caused by severe blood loss,” she said, her expertise evident as she quickly retrieved hemostatic gauze and infection-preventing medication.
“Our resources here are limited. To save him, we’ll need to get him to a hospital for observation and treatment.”
“We can’t go back!” Chief Raymond immediately protested, but the movement caused him to wince in pain.
“Stay away from the city! Stay away from the lower district! Luo Wei, listen to me, those things are everywhere, and their sense of smell is like a hound’s! They’ll be here any moment!”
Luo Wei frowned. “Who’s chasing you?”
“The Truth Cult...” Chief Raymond’s voice was hoarse. “Everyone... everyone’s dead. Only I managed to escape with him...”
“The Truth Cult?” Luo Wei asked, puzzled. “The Truth Cult?”
Chief Raymond nodded.
Luo Wei couldn’t help but feel surprised. He was aware of the recent situation with the Truth Cult. Under the joint efforts of official forces, the once-notorious cult had been reduced to a group of fugitives, either dead or on the run.
Although the remaining remnants were hiding in the complex environment of the lower district, Luo Wei had assumed it was only a matter of time before they were completely dealt with. He never expected things to escalate to this extent...
The chief said only the two of them had escaped. Could it be that even the supernaturals from the Special Affairs Department had been killed?
Did the Truth Cult really have that kind of power?
Chief Raymond gripped Luo Wei’s arm tightly, his voice filled with urgency:
“When we went to raid them, those lunatics were conducting a ritual. I don’t know what method they used... but the supernaturals around me all went mad... They attacked indiscriminately, killing each other and anyone in their path! They all went insane!”
His voice grew weaker, but he insisted on relaying the crucial information to Luo Wei, urging him to be cautious.
“And... those cultists are also insane! They chased us all the way! They climbed onto my car, their claws tearing through metal like it was nothing. Be careful, those things are fast! They feel no pain! Bullets can’t stop them!!”
After finishing his warning, Chief Raymond finally succumbed to his injuries and collapsed unconscious on the ground.
Luo Wei sighed and helped him and his assistant onto the sofa.
Evelyn had been listening intently to the chief’s words. Now, she cautiously looked out the window, her nose twitching slightly.
“It seems the chief is telling the truth...”
“I can smell it—a very strong scent of blood.”
“Brother!” Helena suddenly came running down from upstairs. “Come look outside! There are so many people! So many strange people!”
Luo Wei and Evelyn were both startled, and the three of them hurried to the balcony upstairs.
Looking down, sure enough, through the thick fog, they could vaguely make out a large number of dark figures.
At that moment, those creatures were closing in on the old mansion from all directions.
“Brother... what are these things?” Helena asked, her voice filled with astonishment as she looked at Luo Wei.
“They’re members of the Truth Cult, transformed into monsters,” Luo Wei replied, carefully surveying the mansion.
Fortunately, he had instructed Helena to secure all the doors and windows earlier. If these creatures wanted to break into the mansion, the only way in would be through the open balcony.
Evelyn looked down at the endless stream of monsters emerging from the fog and exclaimed, “There are so many of them!”
By now, many of the monsters had reached the front gate, allowing Luo Wei to observe them up close.
They still retained human-like forms, but their clothes were tattered, revealing patches of messy fur. Their teeth and claws were sharp, and their eyes were a dull, lifeless gray, devoid of any semblance of reason. They let out beast-like roars as they mindlessly charged at the gate.
It reminded Luo Wei of zombies, though these creatures were far too fast.
Listening to the tremors from downstairs, Evelyn frowned and looked at Luo Wei. “Should we reinforce the doors and windows? Could they break in?”
But Luo Wei and Helena showed no concern whatsoever; both of them knew the strength of the old mansion.
“They won’t break through,” Helena said confidently.
Luo Wei nodded at Evelyn. “Don’t worry. Even if they brought a battleship’s cannon to blast this mansion, it wouldn’t budge.”
This was because the mansion was a foundational element of the game’s setting. It might get dirty or dusty, but it was indestructible.
So, despite the overwhelming number of enemies and the seemingly dire situation, Luo Wei wasn’t particularly worried.
“Alright,” Evelyn said, nodding at their confidence.
The tremors from downstairs grew more intense as the horde of monsters surrounded the first floor, but they couldn’t advance any further.
After a while, the dim-witted creatures seemed to finally notice the three people standing on the roof. They began screeching and climbing over each other, piling up like a grotesque pyramid to reach the top.
The first monster to make it up came face to face with Evelyn.
“How ugly...” Evelyn muttered, her disdain for unattractive things evident. With a flash of blood-red light, the monster’s grotesque head flew into the air.
Helena joined the fray as well, the tips of her tentacles transforming into sharp blades. With a single sweep, she cleanly decapitated an entire row of monsters.
Seeing how efficient her tentacles were, Evelyn let out a disdainful huff. Her crimson blade morphed into a massive, blood-red scythe.
She leapt off the roof and fearlessly charged into the sea of black, monstrous figures.
It had to be said that Evelyn, with her countless years of experience, was far more skilled in combat than Helena.
Every swing of her scythe was like a crescent moon of blood, and she moved with such grace among the horde that the monsters, despite their speed, couldn’t even touch the hem of her clothes.
Luo Wei stood on the rooftop, silently watching Evelyn.
In the midst of slaughter, she seemed like a completely different person. A faint smile played on her lips, and amidst the bloodshed, she resembled a poisonous rose blooming in a sea of crimson—both breathtakingly beautiful and deadly.
While Evelyn was in her element with her “free attack” mode, Luo Wei and Helena operated in their familiar “command mode.”
Standing at the highest point of the mansion with a clear view, Luo Wei marked one monster after another, just as he had done countless times before when fighting alongside Helena.
Once the battle began, their connection was so seamless it was as if they were one person.
Helena didn’t need to think about anything else; she simply followed Luo Wei’s marks, and every lash of her tentacles pierced through a monster’s skull with pinpoint accuracy.
From the start of the battle to its end, Helena barely moved from her spot. Not a single monster managed to reach the balcony or infiltrate the mansion.
About twenty minutes later...
The unpleasant roars from downstairs finally ceased. Luo Wei gazed into the distance through the fog, and no new monsters emerged.
